Abeka is a Christian curriculum company that has been serving Christian schools and homeschool families for decades. They have several options for each grade, allowing you to customize your homeschool to best suit the needs of your family.
Option #1 – Video Lessons with Abeka Academy Accreditation:
This option is available for Kindergarten through 12th grade. Parents will supervise students as they watch a teacher in a classroom teach each lesson (available in either a DVD or streaming option). Parents will also need to monitor that students are completing assignments. Abeka Academy will keep track of all grades and records, and can even issue an accredited diploma. If you are looking for “Christian School at Home,” you may find that Abeka’s Accredited Video Academy is the best option for you.
Option #2 – Video Lessons with Independent Study (unaccredited):
This option is available for K4 through 12th grade. Parents will supervise students as they watch a teacher in a classroom teach each lesson, and will monitor that students are completing assignments. Parents will also need to keep track of grades and records, and (optionally) submit that information to Abeka Academy. There is no diploma available through Abeka for this option, though depending on your state/province, you may still be able to acquire an accredited diploma for your student through another accredited diploma granting agency. If you want the flexibility of working through the curriculum at your own pace, the freedom to skip lessons or assignments when necessary, and yet still have the benefit of an experienced professional teaching your child, this may be the option for you.
Option #3 – Parent-Led “Flex” Option (no video, no accreditation)
This option is available for Preschool through 12th grade. The parent is the teacher, and will need to review and prepare lesson plans, instruct the child, and keep track of lessons and grades. In this option, your student is not a part of Abeka Academy, but is still benefitting from their quality education and materials. There is no diploma available through Abeka for this option, though depending on your state/province, you may still be able to acquire an accredited diploma for your student through another accredited diploma granting agency. If you want to enjoy the thorough Christian education that Abeka’s curriculum provides, yet be the one to instruct and work with your child, this may be the best (and definitely the most affordable) option for your family.
All of Abeka’s materials are available to be purchased individually on their website, so if you decide to go with a different curriculum, but see a particular resource you’d still like to include in your homeschool, check their site to purchase that item separately. We have done our best to include the essential kits for each grade and (when available) subject, but you may also purchase additional supplemental materials on the Abeka website. Definitely watch some of our recommended videos and take your time looking around the Abeka website before you make a final shopping list. As you shop, keep in mind that Abeka also creates and sells different versions of their materials for Christian schools, so make sure you are shopping in the “Homeschool” section of their site.
